Minister of Women Affairs Feeds Women and Children in Nigerian Correctional Service

The Minister of Women Affairs, Barrister Uju Kennedy Ohanenye, demonstrated her commitment to improving the wellbeing of Nigerian women and children during her visit to the Nigerian Correctional Service in Suleja, Niger state. The purpose of her visit was to offer support and assistance to the female inmates and their children.

As part of her initiative, the Minister provided food packs to about 520 women and children in the facility. She also presented them with sanitary pads, cartons of soap, detergents, and other provisions to address their basic needs and hygiene requirements.

During her visit, the Minister discovered that the Nigerian Correctional Service in Suleja runs skills acquisition centers that focus on the production of essential products such as Dettol, air fresheners, bags, and tailoring. Additionally, the facility has a school that has produced numerous graduates through the National Open University, as well as successful candidates in examinations conducted by the West African Examination Council (WAEC), National Examination Council (NECO), and the National Business and Technical Examination (NABTECH).

Touched by the plight of the inmates, both male and female, Minister Ohanenye engaged with them individually. She sought to understand the nature of the crimes that led to their incarceration and even went a step further by paying off the optional fines for some inmates as prescribed by the Court. This gesture not only alleviated the financial burden on the inmates but also provided them with a fresh start upon release.

During her interaction with the inmates, the Minister emphasized the negative consequences of criminality and highlighted the importance of becoming law-abiding citizens. By addressing the inmates directly, she aimed to inspire them to reform and rebuild their lives.

The Minister commended the Nigerian Correctional Service in Suleja for establishing skills acquisition centers that equip the inmates with valuable vocational skills. These skills will undoubtedly enable the inmates to contribute positively to society once they complete their jail terms. To further support these efforts, Minister Ohanenye promised to establish a scheme that enhances and expands the existing skills acquisition centers. This initiative will focus on the production of bags, soaps, detergents, and clothes in larger quantities for commercial purposes, benefiting both the inmates and the local economy.

Furthermore, the Minister restated her commitment to addressing various issues affecting women, including gender-based violence, illiteracy, rape, sexual harassment, and female genital mutilation. Through her position as the Minister of Women Affairs, she endeavors to create a society where women are empowered, protected, and respected.

The visit of Barrister Uju Kennedy Ohanenye to the Nigerian Correctional Service in Suleja serves as a reminder of the importance of supporting and uplifting vulnerable groups in society.
