In a move to protest against the non-payment of 25 months arrears and the non-implementation of a 40% peculiar allowance, teachers from the FCT wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) have embarked on an indefinite strike. The strike, which started today, coincides with the resumption of schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for the first term of the academic session.
The decision was reached at an emergency State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) meeting held at the Teachers' House in Gwagwalada. The meeting was attended by NUT state chairman, Comrade Stephen Knabayi, and secretary, Margaret F. Jethro. The council chairmen were accused of failing to pay various outstanding allowances, including the non-implementation of promotion arrears, non-upgrading of teachers, non-implementation of annual increments, and the non-implementation of promotion letters.
In a communique jointly signed by Comrade Stephen Knabayi and Margaret F. Jethro, the NUT stated, "And having explored and exhausted all available avenues of getting these outstanding demands of the concerned teachers met without the desired result including non-commitment of the councils to the welfare of primary school teachers, the SWEC in-session resolved to direct all primary school teachers to embark on an indefinite strike action from Monday; September 11, 2023."
The NUT has emphasized that the strike will continue until their demands are met. They have called on parents in the FCT to keep their children safe at home and support the teachers in their fight for their rights.
This strike action has brought to light the lingering issue of unpaid arrears and the neglect of teachers' welfare in the FCT. It is a reflection of the frustration and discontent among teachers who have been struggling with financial difficulties for months. The non-payment of arrears has put a significant strain on teachers and their families, affecting their ability to meet their basic needs.
Teachers play a vital role in society, shaping the future by educating and nurturing the next generation. It is essential that they are adequately compensated for their efforts and provided with the necessary support and resources to carry out their duties effectively. The current situation in the FCT highlights the need for a more comprehensive and responsive approach to addressing the challenges faced by teachers.
While the strike may cause disruptions to the education system in the FCT, it serves as a wake-up call to the authorities to prioritize the welfare of teachers and take immediate action to resolve the issues at hand. The education sector plays a critical role in the development of any nation, and ensuring the well-being of teachers is crucial for the overall success of the system.
Education stakeholders, including government officials and policymakers, must come together to find sustainable solutions that address the concerns raised by the NUT. It is only through open dialogue and a commitment to resolving these issues that the education system in the FCT can thrive and provide quality education to the students.
