The Vice-President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, H.E. Mrs Damtien L. Tchintchibidja, recently had a productive meeting with a delegation from the UN Women Representation in Nigeria. Led by Mrs Beatrice EYONG, the UN Women Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS, the visit aimed to explore mutual areas of collaboration and discuss the renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the two organizations in 2019.
Mrs. Beatrice EYONG, during the meeting, highlighted the ongoing initiatives and programs of UN Women and expressed the desire to strengthen the partnership with ECOWAS. The areas of potential collaboration presented by the UN Women Representative included support for institutional capacity building, particularly in the collection and processing of gender-related data. This aligns with the organization's commitment to promoting women's rights and empowerment by ensuring accurate and comprehensive data is available to inform policy decisions.
Another crucial aspect discussed was the mainstreaming of gender within the ECOWAS framework. UN Women, through its collaboration with ECOWAS, aims to enhance the integration of gender perspectives across various sectors and programs. This would contribute to the creation of an inclusive society where women have equal opportunities and representation.
Women's leadership and participation in political, peace, and security processes were emphasized as essential areas of focus. By supporting and enabling the meaningful engagement of women in decision-making roles, both ECOWAS and UN Women aim to create a more balanced and peaceful West Africa. The Women, Peace, and Security Agenda were underscored as a critical aspect that needs strengthening in the region.
Technical cooperation between ECOWAS and UN Women received special attention during the meeting. The two organizations expressed the need to exchange knowledge and expertise in diverse areas, such as gender mainstreaming, peacebuilding, and recovery efforts. This collaboration would facilitate the development and implementation of effective strategies to address the challenges faced by women in West Africa.
Mrs Beatrice EYONG affirmed UN Women's commitment to mobilizing resources and conducting high-level advocacy to promote women's human rights and empowerment. By partnering with ECOWAS, the organization aims to amplify its efforts and create meaningful change in the region.
Upon welcoming the delegation, H.E. Mrs Damtien L. Tchintchibidja, the Vice-President of the ECOWAS Commission, emphasized the Commission's existing initiatives for the protection of women's rights and socio-economic inclusion. ECOWAS, through its Early Warning Mechanism, Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Department of Human Development and Social Affairs, and ECOWAS Centre for Gender Development, is actively working towards women's empowerment and their meaningful participation in areas of peace, security, and humanitarian action.
The meeting between ECOWAS and UN Women signifies a renewed commitment to collaboration and strengthening the rights and growth of women in West Africa. Through joint efforts and shared resources, both organizations intend to achieve sustainable development, gender equality, and peace in the region.
