Enugu Electricity Distribution Company Cautioning Customers Against Free Meter Upgrade Scams
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has issued a warning to its customers regarding swindlers attempting to extort money by offering fake meter upgrade services. The EEDC has clarified that the upgrade of the Standard Transfer Specification (STS) prepaid meters will be provided free-of-charge. Customers are advised to be cautious and not fall victim to these unscrupulous individuals. The upgrade process will be done by simply inserting Key Change Tokens (KCT), alongside the credit token when recharging the meters. The EEDC emphasizes the importance of upgrading the meters before November 24, 2024, as non-upgraded meters will no longer accept new tokens after this date.

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has cautioned its customers against falling victim to swindlers as the planned upgrade of the Standard Transfer Specification (STS) prepaid meters in its network will be free-of-charge.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Mr. Emeka Ezeh, the Head of Corporate Communications of EEDC, clarified that the meter upgrade will not incur any cost to customers. This clarification comes in response to reports of fraudulent activities by individuals posing as meter upgrade technicians who are extorting unsuspecting customers.

Ezeh urges customers not to fall for these scams as legitimate upgrade services offered by the EEDC will be provided at no charge. The upgrade process involves a simple procedure of punching Key Change Tokens (KCT) into the meter, which will be provided to customers alongside the credit token during meter recharge.

The EEDC alerted customers earlier this month that all STS prepaid meters would cease accepting credit tokens unless upgraded before November 24, 2024. This upgrade will affect all STS compliant prepaid meters worldwide.

"Customers of EEDC are advised to ensure that their meters are upgraded before the set date of November 24, 2024. Meters not upgraded before this date will no longer accept new tokens. However, they will continue functioning until the remaining loaded credit is used up," emphasizes Ezeh.

Ezeh also explains that any credit tokens purchased but not loaded onto the meters before the upgrade will become invalid after the upgrade process is completed.

The EEDC assures customers that further communication and details regarding the upgrade process will be provided shortly, reiterating that the upgrade is entirely free of charge and at no cost to customers.
