EFCC Reiterates Commitment to Fighting Corruption, Urges Media Support
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reaffirmed its dedication to combating corruption in Nigeria and urged journalists to assist in the fight against financial crimes. During a workshop on reporting economic and financial crimes, the EFCC called on media professionals to educate politicians' families and close associates about the consequences of money laundering. The event aimed to enhance journalists' skills in effectively covering financial crimes. The EFCC acknowledged the media's role in its success and emphasized the importance of press support in reducing corruption.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reiterated its commitment to fighting corruption and ensuring that those who steal from the public treasury face justice. Speaking at a workshop on effective reporting of economic and financial crimes, the Acting Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Abdulkarim Chukkol, urged journalists to support the commission's efforts to reduce corruption in the country.

Chukkol highlighted that under the Money Laundering Act of 2022, family members and close allies of politicians and public office holders are now classified as politically exposed persons. He emphasized that ignorance of the law would not be an excuse.

The workshop, held at the EFCC Zonal Command Office in Ibadan, aimed to upgrade the skills of journalists from print, electronic, and online media, enabling them to report on financial crimes more efficiently. Chukkol stated that the media plays a critical role in disseminating information about the EFCC's operations and mobilizing the public to embrace the fight against corruption.

"The decision to engage you all in a training session is buoyed by the appreciation of the fact that you occupy a strategic place in the fight against corruption," Chukkol said. "You are the vehicle through which the EFCC reaches the Nigerian public with information about our operations. You also play crucial roles in helping to mobilize the people to embrace the fight against corruption. This makes the media one of the most critical allies of the EFCC."

He added, "We greatly value your critical reviews as it ensures we remain faithful to the Nigerian people in the discharge of our mandate, and we owe the media a debt of gratitude for the successes we have recorded in the last twenty years."

The EFCC boss called on journalists to educate politicians' family members and friends about the risks of participating in money laundering activities. He highlighted that their companies or bank accounts could be used to launder proceeds from illegal actions, putting them at risk of imprisonment.

The workshop featured several speakers who shared their expertise on different topics related to economic and financial crimes. Larrys Peters Aso spoke on "Understanding the new money laundering laws in relation to activities of designated non-financial businesses and professions," while Mr. Dele Oyewale delivered a paper on "Investigative journalism and Nigeria's fight against money laundering." Taibat Sallahdeen addressed the participants on "New trends in cybercrime: How not to become a victim."

The EFCC's continued efforts to combat corruption and financial crimes are crucial in Nigeria's pursuit of a transparent and accountable society. By engaging with the media and providing them with the necessary tools and knowledge, the EFCC aims to strengthen the fight against corruption and promote the country's economic development.
