Bayelsa State Election Tribunal Nullifies Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency Election
The state election tribunal in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state, has nullified the election of the Sagbama/Ekeremor federal constituency and sacked Hon Fred Agbedi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The tribunal ordered a fresh election within ninety days due to the violent incidents recorded during the previous election. INEC has been instructed to conduct the fresh election in certain wards and units. Hon Agbedi has stated his willingness to contest in the supplementary election.

Bayelsa, Yenagoa - In a recent development, the state election tribunal in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state, has nullified the election of the Sagbama/Ekeremor federal constituency and sacked Hon Fred Agbedi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The tribunal, which ordered the withdrawal of the certificate of return issued to Hon Agbedi by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has called for a fresh election within ninety days.

The decision to nullify the election came in the wake of violent incidents that marred the previous election in the constituency. The electoral tribunal deemed it necessary to ensure that all eligible voters who were disenfranchised during the last legislative election in the state have the opportunity to exercise their democratic rights.

However, despite the nullification of the election, the tribunal did not declare the petitioner, Michael Olomu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the winner as he had requested in his petition. The judicial panel upheld the validity of the 9000 vote margin accrued by Hon Agbedi against Olomu in the previous election.

As part of the tribunal's verdict, INEC has been instructed to conduct a fresh election in Ward Five and certain units in Ward Eleven in the Sagbama council area. In addition, units in Ward Eleven and Ward Twelve in Ekeremor LGA are also included in the areas where a new election should be organized. These areas comprise a total of approximately 26,000 registered voters in both Ekeremor and Sagbama Local Government Areas. It is within these areas that both Hon Agbedi and petitioner Michael Olomu will contest for the seat in the supplementary election.

Upon hearing the tribunal's verdict, Hon Fred Agbedi revealed that he has no plans to appeal the decision. He expressed his willingness to contest in the supplementary election and remains committed to serving the people of the Sagbama/Ekeremor federal constituency.

Moving on to another state, the Benue state election tribunal has recently declared Gabriel Suswam of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the February 25 Senatorial election. Suswam emerged victorious over Emmanuel Udende of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) after a judgement that lasted over three hours in Markudi, the capital of Benue state.

With the nullification of the election in the Sagbama/Ekeremor federal constituency and the subsequent call for a fresh election, the citizens of Bayelsa state eagerly await the opportunity to cast their votes and determine their representatives at the federal level once again.
