Cultural Carnival Promotes Cultural Understanding and Appreciation among Nigerian Youths

The Ogun State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mr. Jimba Olawole Chris, has emphasized the significance of the cultural carnival in changing negative perceptions of other people's cultures and traditions among corps members. This annual event serves as a platform for young Nigerians to cherish and appreciate the varied cultures and traditions that exist within the country.

The 2023 Batch B stream two Cultural Carnival held at the Gateway International Stadium, Sagamu, was a captivating spectacle that displayed the cultural wealth of Nigeria. Participants were grouped into platoons, each representing a different Nigerian culture. The event showcased cultures such as Igbo, Benue, Delta, Rivers, Hausa, Fulani, Yoruba, and many others, through colorful costumes, dance performances, and traditional music.

The carnival, a highlight of the three-week orientation course, attracted a significant number of corps members and the camp community. The lively atmosphere brimmed with excitement as attendees immersed themselves in the cultural experience. Corps members hailed from various ethnic backgrounds, and the cultural carnival provided them with an opportunity to transcend their differences and celebrate their shared Nigerian identity.

Hajjia Munirat Hussein, a graduate of English Language from the University of Jos, expressed her delight at the event, saying, "The carnival was very interesting. I have not witnessed such a parade of colors and costumes different from what I see in Jos and Benue where I come from. I confess it is the greatest social part of the orientation programme."

The NYSC's inclusion of the cultural carnival in the orientation course content underscores its commitment to fostering unity and appreciating Nigeria's cultural diversity. By exposing corps members to different cultural traditions, the NYSC cultivates mutual respect and understanding among young Nigerians.
