The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration in Nigeria is venturing into strategic partnerships with South Korea and Turkiye to enhance vocational education and agricultural development in the territory. Minister Nyesom Wike expressed his admiration for South Korea's vocational education model, emphasizing the importance of equipping students with practical skills that would be beneficial for their future careers.
The Minister, during a visit from the South Korean Ambassador, Kim Young-Chae, highlighted his desire to reintroduce the vocational education partnership and explore the implementation of a hands-on model similar to what he witnessed during his visit to Samsung. He was impressed by Samsung's approach of supplying refrigerators and cars to vocational schools, facilitating practical learning experiences for students.
"Vocational education is very key to us," said Wike, emphasizing the relevance of vocational skills in the FCT's workforce. In collaboration with South Korea, the FCT Administration plans to enhance vocational schools and skill acquisition centers to ensure students receive practical training.
Additionally, the South Korean delegation shared plans for collaboration in the field of agriculture. The FCT Administration is exploring opportunities to partner with Turkiye, utilizing the available large arable land within the territory for agricultural development.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Rural Electrification Agency, South Korea is also working on establishing a mini electricity grid in the FCT. The ongoing project aims to provide sustainable electricity to support agricultural activities and improve access to power within the territory.
Furthermore, South Korea intends to introduce a grant project to assist young entrepreneurs in starting new businesses, indicating their commitment to fostering economic growth and development in the FCT. This initiative accompanies the existing Nigeria-Korea Model School, which enhances educational opportunities for students in the territory.
Highlighting the potential for collaboration, the Turkiye Ambassador, Mr. Hidayet Bayrakter, expressed interest in the construction of the second phase of the Abuja metro rail line. He noted that Turkiye possesses capable construction companies experienced in rail projects and suspension bridges, having previously worked on similar projects in Dubai and Qatar.
Bayrakter emphasized the willingness of Turkish investors to meet with the FCT Minister for further discussions on the rail project. However, he also called for a review of the Turkish visa policy, arguing that the existing policy of short-term, single-entry visas may hinder effective business collaborations.
The FCT Minister assured the Turkiye Ambassador of the Administration's open-door policy in discussing potential partnerships with Turkish companies for the Abuja rail project. Wike's invitation for collaboration in agricultural development underlines the FCT's commitment to leveraging benefits from international partnerships to drive progress in various sectors.
The strong collaboration between the FCT Administration, South Korea, and Turkiye reflects a shared determination to foster education, skills development, and agricultural growth within the Federal Capital Territory, while also promoting economic cooperation between nations.
