Enugu State has recently witnessed a significant event in its political landscape as the National and State Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in the state has voided the election of Honourable Bright Ngene of the Labour Party as the House of Assembly member representing Enugu South urban constituency.
The three-man panel, led by A. M. Abubakar, made the decision, which includes ordering a rerun election in the Enugu South Urban constituency within 90 days, as reported by Sahara Reporters.
The basis for nullifying the election lies in the fact that the number of votes attributed to the declared winner, Honourable Bright Ngene, was fewer than the number of disenfranchised voters in the constituency. This discrepancy has prompted the tribunal to declare the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) wrong in declaring Ngene the winner of the election.
Instead, the tribunal ruled that the election should have been declared inconclusive, with a re-run election conducted in the units where the election was not properly conducted based on the margin of lead.
On a separate note, Honourable Atta Achief Thaddeus, the House of Representatives member-elect for Eti-Osa Federal Constituency in Lagos state, has debunked media reports suggesting the cancellation of his election victory.
The parliamentary election petition tribunal in Lagos state ruled that a supplementary election should be carried out in 32 polling units within 90 days. Unfortunately, this decision has been misrepresented as a cancellation of Thaddeus' election victory.
It is essential to clarify that the tribunal's decision does not negate Thaddeus' win, but rather necessitates a supplementary election in specific polling units where irregularities were identified. This clarification aims to quell any uncertainty surrounding the matter.
Furthermore, Uche Rochas, an ally of Senator Chimaroke Nnamani of Enugu State, has recently expressed his thoughts on Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi, suggesting severe trouble if Obi ever proclaims himself as President of Nigeria.
Rochas conveyed his viewpoint through his social media platform, emphasizing that while Obi's supporters and any Nigerian may refer to him as President, such actions would not carry any legal weight.
As the situation in Enugu State unfolds with the voided election and subsequent rerun, it will be crucial to closely observe developments and assess the potential impact on the political and electoral landscape in the state. Similarly, attention should be paid to the successful clarification of Honourable Atta Achief Thaddeus' election victory amidst media misrepresentation. These events highlight the importance of transparent and fair electoral processes.
