Enugu, Enugu state - Engr. Chijioke Stanislaus Okereke, the member representing Aninri, Awgu, Oji-River federal constituency at the national assembly, has expressed his decision to approach the Court of Appeal after the National Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Anayo Onwuegbu, as the rightful winner of the Aninri/Awgu/Oji River federal constituency election.
The National Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal, sitting in Enugu, nullified the earlier declaration of Okereke, a member of the Labour Party (LP), as the winner of the February 25, 2023, National Assembly Election. The tribunal directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue the Certificate of Returns to Onwuegbu.
Reacting to the tribunal's ruling, Okereke expressed his belief in the need for a review, stating, "We are determined to exhaust all legal avenues to ensure that the voice of the people is heard and their mandate is upheld. Our democracy is built upon the principle of the people's right to choose their representatives, and it is our duty to safeguard and protect that right."
He emphasized the support and prayers he has received from constituents who believe in his vision for inclusive, sustainable, and need-driven governance. Okereke assured his constituents that the appeal process would be approached with respect for the rule of law and unwavering determination.
Until his removal by the tribunal, Okereke had been representing the Aninri/Awgu/Oji-River federal constituency in the House of Representatives. The tribunal's ruling has now reshaped the political landscape in the constituency.
With Okereke's decision to seek redress through the Court of Appeal, the legal battle surrounding the Aninri/Awgu/Oji River federal constituency election is set to continue. The outcome of the appeal will determine the final representative for the constituency in the 10th National Assembly.
