NIFOR Collaborates with Luscei Investment Limited to Revive Palm Research
The Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR) has partnered with Luscei Investment Limited to restore its core mission and expertise in palm research. Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), NIFOR will provide the planting materials for a 40-hectare field, while the company will manage the planting, maintenance, and harvesting. This collaboration aims to combat decline in research standards caused by human activities and enhance NIFOR's positioning in the global scientific community.

The Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR) has taken a significant step towards reviving its palm research activities through a collaborative effort with Luscei Investment Limited. In a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed at NIFOR's headquarters near Benin City, the institute and the private palm-producing company agreed to host NIFOR's Extension Works Seed (EWS) fields.

Under the terms of the partnership, NIFOR will supply the planting materials for a 40-hectare field, ensuring the availability of essential resources for research and development. Luscei Investment Limited will oversee the planting, maintenance, and harvesting of the field, working closely with NIFOR's technical personnel.

Celestine Ikuenobe, the executive director of NIFOR, expressed concern over the decline in the institute's operational standards due to human activities. He emphasized the necessity of forging partnerships with organizations like Luscei Investment Limited to restore best practices and revive NIFOR's core mission.

Ikuenobe highlighted the vital role of NIFOR as the premier Palm Research Institute in Africa and acknowledged the need to address the erosion of the institute's scientific culture. He disclosed instances of staff disrespecting science by engaging in inappropriate activities within NIFOR's experimental fields, leading to the destruction of years' worth of work.

"This is where our competitors beat us because they are able to control such occurrences in their locations and sometimes adopt shoot-at-sight methods to achieve strict compliance with 'out-of-bound' rules," Ikuenobe lamented.

In an effort to combat internal sabotage, NIFOR is seeking collaborations with private estates and implementing stricter measures. The partnership with Luscei Investment Limited is an essential step in this direction to protect NIFOR's research assets and enhance its productivity.

Oluseyi Adeleke, the managing director of Luscei Investment Limited, expressed his delight with the collaboration, stating that the agreement would span 20 years. He praised the guidance received from NIFOR, which helped reduce land acquisition costs and ensured the resilience of their plant material.

Sharing an anecdote, Adeleke mentioned an unexpected benefit of the collaboration. During an experimental phase, they inadvertently delayed the harvest, leading to the discovery of the plants' resilience. This quality attracted major oil producers, who now source from Luscei Investment Limited's farms.

This collaborative effort between NIFOR and Luscei Investment Limited is expected to rejuvenate NIFOR's research activities and strengthen its contribution to the global scientific community. By leveraging private sector expertise, NIFOR aims to regain its position as a leading institute for palm research and promote sustainable agricultural practices in Nigeria.
