Edo State Implements Law on Local Council Administration, Provides Allowances for Traditional Rulers
The Edo State Government has approved the implementation of a 1979 Law on local council administration, granting monthly allowances to traditional rulers in all 18 local government areas. This move aims to enable the traditional rulers to carry out their responsibilities effectively and ensure peace and harmony within their domains.

The Edo State Government has taken a significant step towards empowering traditional rulers in the state by implementing a 1979 Law on local council administration. This decision, reached at the Executive Council meeting held at the Government House in Benin City, will see monthly allowances provided to all traditional rulers in the state's 18 local government areas.

The Secretary to the Edo State Government, Osarodion Ogie, Esq., highlighted that the new law establishes a traditional council in each local government area across the state. The Oba of Benin, who serves as the permanent chairman of the Edo State Traditional Council of Obas and Chiefs and also the Benin Traditional Council, will continue in these roles.

The introduction of these allowances will empower traditional rulers to fulfill their statutory duties, which include maintaining social cohesion, promoting peace, and ensuring harmonious living within their communities. The financial support will enable them to carry out traditional vigilance and contribute to the overall development of their domains.

The Edo State Executive Council also emphasized that the funding for the Benin Traditional Council, which serves as the umbrella body for the Edo South Traditional Council, will be completely independent of the financing provided to other traditional councils in the various local government areas of the state.

This move is expected to enhance the effectiveness of traditional rulers in Edo State and enable them to work more closely with relevant stakeholders to maintain peace, order, and accelerate grassroots development. By supporting their role as custodians of tradition and guardians of social norms, the government aims to promote the preservation of Edo culture and heritage.

With this legislation, traditional rulers will have the resources necessary to address the unique challenges and opportunities within their local government areas, fostering a sense of pride and identity among their subjects. The allowances signify a recognition of their important roles and the significance of their contributions to the social fabric of Edo State.

The implementation of the 1979 Law on local council administration marks a milestone in promoting good governance and effective community leadership in Edo State. It is a testament to the commitment of the state government to uphold traditional values and empower traditional rulers to play an active role in the development of their communities.
