House of Representatives Committee Calls for Unconditional Release of IPOB Leader Nnamdi Kanu for Peace in the South-East
The House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee has called for the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), as a solution to the security challenges in the South-East region of Nigeria. The committee, set up to address kidnapping, assassinations, and banditry, emphasized the need for lasting peace and security in the area, stating that government recognition of the rule of law and justice, as well as the inclusion of the South-East in national development projects, are crucial. The committee also commended the efforts of state governments and the Federal Government in addressing security concerns, while acknowledging the need for multi-faceted collaboration to combat insecurity effectively.

ABUJA - The House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee set up to interface with relevant security agencies to reduce kidnapping, assassinations and banditry in and around Isiukwuato and Umunnochi local government areas of Abia State, has called for the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), as a panacea for peace in the South-East.

The committee, chaired by Hon. Obinna Aguocha, believes that addressing the root causes of insecurity is essential for lasting peace and security in the region. They highlighted the significance of government's recognition of the rule of law, justice, and equitable inclusion of the South-East in national development projects.

As the committee actively engages with various stakeholders to find sustainable solutions, they stress the importance of a multi-faceted approach that involves law enforcement agencies, community leaders, policymakers, scholars, and citizens. They aim to harness the diverse perspectives and expertise towards coherent and actionable strategies for peace.

One of the challenges identified by the committee is the cross-border dynamics of the primary focus areas, which require inter-state collaboration. They encourage regional participation and the synergy of resources, expertise, and perspectives to combat insecurity collaboratively.

Hon. Amobi Ogah, the sponsor of the motion that led to the composition of the committee, accused the police of prioritizing multiple checkpoints for extortion instead of actively addressing criminal activities in the troubled areas. He emphasized the need for the police to comb the bushes and flush out criminals.

In addressing the issue of non-remittance of funds to the National Housing Fund (NHF) and the non-utilization of the funds, the House of Representatives committee has summoned the Accountant General of the Federation. The committee seeks explanations for disparities in the deductions from workers' salaries and the low remittance of only N20 billion to the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) since 2011.

In response, the representative of the Director of the Integrated Personnel Payroll and Information System (IPPIS) stated that deductions were automatic, but remittances were not automated. The committee requested information on the amount deducted since 2011, as well as the reasons for non-remittance.

The committee also urged the Accountant General to remit all housing fund deductions to the FMBN and present receipts to the committee. Managing Director of the FMBN, Madu Hamman, appealed for an amendment to the FMBN Act and the National Housing Fund Act to enhance the operation of the NHF.

The committee's efforts to address the security challenges in the South-East and ensure the effective operation of the NHF demonstrate the commitment of the House of Representatives to peace, security, and socio-economic development in Nigeria.
