Deputy Governor of Edo State Pledges Loyalty to His Principal amidst Rift Rumors
Philip Shaibu, the Deputy Governor of Edo State, has publicly declared his loyalty to his principal, Governor Godwin Obaseki, despite rumors of a rift between them. Shaibu affirmed his unwavering support for Obaseki during the 32nd-anniversary ceremony of Edo State. He emphasized that loyalty has nothing to do with his ambition to become the governor of Edo State in the future. This clarification comes after a recent incident where Shaibu was denied access to Governor Obaseki by a security aide. The governor has also addressed concerns about the influence of the "emilokan spirit" in Edo State politics.

Benin City, Edo state - In an effort to put an end to the speculations surrounding his alleged rift with Governor Godwin Obaseki, the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, has publicly pledged his loyalty to his principal. During the 32nd-anniversary ceremony of Edo State held at the government house in Benin City, Shaibu described Obaseki as his "elder brother" and reiterated his unwavering support.

Shaibu sought to downplay the rumored rift, declining to make any negative comments about the governor. "My loyalty to the governor remains absolute. I see that everybody is doing solidarity. I am also in solidarity with the governor. I am also declaring my unalloyed solidarity and loyalty to the governor and nothing more," said Shaibu.

However, the deputy governor was quick to clarify that his loyalty to Governor Obaseki does not diminish his personal ambition to become the governor of Edo State in the future. He emphasized that loyalty and personal ambitions are separate matters and should not be conflated.

The alleged rift between Obaseki and Shaibu came to the forefront during the 32nd-anniversary ceremony when a security aide to Governor Obaseki prevented Shaibu from accessing his principal. This incident further fueled speculation about the deteriorating relationship between the two political figures.

It is no secret that Philip Shaibu has been rumored to have ambitions of vying for the governorship seat of Edo State in the upcoming 2024 gubernatorial elections. This has apparently caused tensions between him and Governor Obaseki, who has made it clear that he seeks to secure his position for a second term.

Meanwhile, Governor Obaseki, while addressing the audience at the anniversary ceremony, referenced the "emilokan spirit" popularized by a prominent political figure, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He clarified that such influence would not sway the politics of Edo State, hinting at the need for local autonomy and decision-making free from external interference.

The public declaration of loyalty by Philip Shaibu aims to dispel rumors and reaffirm his commitment to the current administration in Edo State. As the deputy governor continues to assert his political ambitions, the dynamics between him and Governor Obaseki will undoubtedly be closely monitored in the coming years.
