Nigerian Communications Commission Receives Commendation for Telecom Consumer Protection Initiatives
The Lamido of Adamawa, Dr. Muhammadu Mustapha, has commended the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for its efforts in consumer protection initiatives. The recent Village Square Dialogue held in Adamawa State provided an opportunity for consumers to engage with the regulator and seek clarifications on telecom-related issues. The NCC has been praised for its commitment to consumer education and enlightenment, as well as the introduction of consumer-friendly initiatives such as harmonized shortcodes and toll-free numbers.

The Lamido of Adamawa, Dr. Muhammadu Mustapha, has applauded the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for its commendable efforts in ensuring the protection and empowerment of telecom consumers in the country. Speaking through Prof. Abubakar Tahir at the recent Village Square Dialogue (VSD) held in Yola, Adamawa State, the royal father expressed gratitude to the NCC for bringing this laudable initiative to the people of Adamawa.

The consumer conversation programme, themed "Know Your Rights as Telecom Consumers," provided telecom consumers and businesses in the state with the opportunity to engage directly with the regulator and seek clarification on various telecom-related matters. This dialogue format facilitated a face-to-face interaction between consumers, service providers, and the NCC.

Prof. Abubakar Tahir acknowledged the NCC's commitment to consumer education and enlightenment, emphasizing their role in not only being the regulator but also ensuring that consumers are well-informed. He commended the NCC for the great work done in this area and encouraged the Commission to explore additional avenues to reduce the cost of telecom services and ensure accessibility nationwide.

Representing the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, the Director of Consumer Affairs, Alkasim Umar, reiterated the Commission's commitment to protecting and empowering telecom consumers. He highlighted the introduction of harmonized shortcodes as a consumer-centric initiative that provides uniform access codes across all networks for airtime loading, checking balance, call centers, and more.

Umar also reminded consumers of the availability of the NCC Toll-Free Number (622) to lodge complaints, the Emergency Number (112) for immediate assistance during emergencies, and the Do-Not-Disturb (DND) Short Code (2442) to block unsolicited messages.

Citing the Nigerian Communications Act, Umar emphasized that consumer education is essential for protecting their rights and interests in the digital world dominated by telecommunications services. Empowering consumers through information and enlightenment equips them against unfair practices by service providers.

He concluded by stating that the telecom industry is crucial for socioeconomic development and that initiatives like the Village Square Dialogue play a vital role in sensitizing people about their rights, privileges, and expectations from telecom businesses in Nigeria.
