PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria - Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has warned traditional state rulers, cautioning them against involvement in cult activities.
The governor's statement comes in the wake of the brutal murder of Divisional Police Officer Bako Amgbashim by suspected cultists.
Speaking on Monday, September 11, 2023, at the commissioning of Mgbuodohia internal roads in Obio-Akpor, Rivers State, Governor Fubara vowed to take stringent actions against any traditional rulers who were supporting or involved in cultism.
"Any traditional ruler supporting cultism and starting to become a problem in the state will have to deal with the consequences. As I've already begun with one suspension, I will come after you,"the governor warned.
This stern warning follows Fubara's decision to indefinitely suspend a monarch connected to the recent murder of Amgbashim, a Superintendent of Police attached to the Rivers Police Command.
Amgbashim was killed last Friday while leading a security operation in the Odiemudie community of the Ahoada East Local Government Area.
During the commissioning, Governor Fubara called for a moment of silence in memory of the slain police officer.
"I know we are in a deplorable state in this city, and more so in our state, Rivers State, because of the recent incident. I would wish for everyone to stand up and observe a minute of silence,"he said.
On Sunday, September 10, 2023, the governor had convened an emergency State Security Council meeting at the Government House in Port Harcourt.
He affirmed his administration's commitment to ensuring that Rivers State does not become a sanctuary for criminals.
Fubara assured that the suspects responsible for Amgbashim's murder would be apprehended, "dead or alive."
The governor expressed confidence in the state's security agencies' ability to investigate and apprehend all those involved in the crime.
The recent developments highlight the complex challenges facing Rivers State as it grapples with issues of cultism and violent crime.
