Benue State Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia has failed to meet public expectations by shunning the media and refusing to account for his first 100 days in office. This move has caused disappointment among both the media and the opposition Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP).
Just a day prior, the PDP issued a statement expressing their dissatisfaction with Governor Alia's 100 days in office, labeling it a "big disappointment." The party's Publicity Secretary, Bemgba Iortyom, questioned the lack of notable achievements and criticized the governor's failure to fulfill his promises.
In response, the governor organized a press conference to address his accomplishments during his 100-day tenure. Media executives, reporters, bloggers, and members of the new cabinet eagerly awaited the briefing which was scheduled for 9 am on Wednesday. However, the event took an unexpected turn when Deputy Governor Barr. Sam Ode announced the cancellation, stating that the governor was engaged in a zoom conference with other All Progressives Congress (APC) governors on security matters.
This sudden cancellation only further reinforces the PDP's claims that Governor Alia's stewardship has been a "colossal failure" devoid of any significant achievements. The party emphasized the governor's unfulfilled promises, including the return of internally displaced persons and the clearance of salary and pension arrears.
PDP lamented that even after clocking 100 days in office, the governor failed to present himself publicly to account for his actions. They highlighted the plight of the IDPs who remain in camps and the deteriorating conditions for workers, who are subjected to arbitrary deductions, demotions, and unlawful termination of employment contracts.
The party also pointed out the governor's governance style as a sole administrator, with all state financial accounts frozen and stored in his briefcase. They criticized his unilateral decision-making and complete lack of transparency, further solidifying their claims that he is not fit for public accountability.
"Governor Hyacinth Alia pins yet another badge of dishonor and infamy as the first governor to run away from an accountability briefing at his first 100 days in office," Bemgba Iortyom stated disapprovingly.
This disappointing turn of events raises concerns about the governor's ability to lead effectively and deliver on his promises. His failure to engage with the media and the public only fuels speculation and undermines the trust placed in him by the people of Benue State.
It remains to be seen how Governor Alia will address this setback and regain the confidence of the public. The lack of accountability during the critical first 100 days in office does not bode well for the future of Benue State under his leadership.
