Warri - Tantita Security Services Nigeria Ltd (TSSNL), a private security company, has accused the Nigerian Navy of deliberate blackmail, harassment, and misinformation surrounding the recent arrest of four of its operatives for alleged crude oil theft. In a statement released by TSSNL, owned by former agitator Chief Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, the company presented evidence to counter the navy's claims.
The incident occurred on August 29, 2023, when Tantita operatives received credible intelligence about a motorised wooden boat illegally loading crude oil from an offshore oil well jacket. Acting on the information, TSSNL dispatched a team to intercept the boat, while a backup team, consisting of personnel from the Nigeria Civil Defence and Security Corps (NSCDC), was assembled to provide support.
According to TSSNL, their teams boarded the wooden boat and attempted to secure it, as captured in video evidence. However, the Nigerian Navy's version of events differs significantly. In their statement, they claimed to have responded to distress calls from youths in Itolou Community in the Lekki axis of Lagos, which led them to the scene of the arrest. The navy further alleged that upon arrival, they found four Tantita employees dressed in black polo shirts attempting to recover a dismantled outboard engine from a local.
Tantita Security Services Nigeria Ltd expressed confusion over the navy's narrative, as the alleged crime of the operatives, according to the navy, was merely trying to recover an outboard engine. TSSNL questioned why this action would be considered criminal. They also highlighted the lack of a clear link between the outboard engine incident and the navy's sudden realization that the arrested individuals were involved in stolen crude oil transportation.
The private security company claims that there are additional damning revelations that cannot be divulged publicly due to national security concerns. They assert that the continued detention of their operatives by the Nigerian Navy is a disservice to the nation, considering the bravery and selflessness demonstrated by the Tantita team to protect Nigeria's resources.
The arrest comes amidst calls from the public for the renewal of the Pipeline Surveillance Contract awarded to TSSNL, which expired on August 31, 2023. The company has been praised for its efforts in combating oil theft and economic sabotage, and many believe that renewing the contract is essential for maintaining security and preventing further losses.
Tantita Security Services Nigeria Ltd is now urging for a fair investigation into the incident and calls for the navy to refrain from blackmail and misinformation. The company emphasizes its respect for the Nigerian Navy's constitutional mandate and hopes for a resolution that benefits the nation's security and common objectives.
