Abuja, September 2, 2023 - Nigerian President Paul Tinoobu has urged the United Nations to enhance its assistance in combating terrorism, considering the cascading effects on global peace, human displacement, and increasing poverty.
In a press statement released by the Presidency on Friday, Tinoobu emphasized that terrorism has persistently eroded gains achieved in development, while exacerbating instability in families and communities. This call was made during a meeting with Vladimir Voronkov, the Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, in Nigeria's capital city, Abuja, on Thursday.
Voronkov praised Nigeria's contribution to the global fight against terrorism and acknowledged Nigeria's existing framework for prevention, mitigation, and reconciliation.
Furthermore, Voronkov highlighted that the United Nations plans to hold an Anti-Terrorism Summit in Abuja, scheduled for April 2024, which will largely be driven by African nations with African agenda.
Nigeria has long been afflicted by terrorist organizations such as Boko Haram, and President Tinoobu has made counter-terrorism one of the key priorities for his new government since his inauguration in May.
In a report issued in February, the United Nations Development Program stated that sub-Saharan Africa, including Nigeria, has become the new epicenter of violent extremism globally, with nearly half of the world's terrorism-related deaths in 2021 recorded in the region.
