The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is set to organize a three-day leadership retreat for Nigerian governors in Kigali, Rwanda. The program, which is funded by the UNDP, aims to enhance leadership skills and address the complex challenges faced by African countries.

The retreat, scheduled for 24-27 August, will provide a transformative platform for public officials to collectively reflect, learn, and exchange insights on effective leadership in highly complex and uncertain environments. Through experiential learning and reflection, the participating governors will be equipped with the necessary skills and competencies to lead their states in the face of various challenges.

Lealem Berhand Dinku of the UNDP emphasized the need for a new leadership approach to transform challenges into opportunities. In today's dynamic world, African countries face a range of megatrends, including threats to democratic governance, the impact of digital and innovation-driven societies, a looming job crisis, urbanization, globalization, and climate change.

Facilitators from around the world have been selected to lead sessions on topics such as reimagining the future of Nigeria, the opportunities and challenges of contemporary leadership, and the influence of digital transformation and emerging technologies on development. Other sessions will focus on ensuring socio-economic transformations in industries, agriculture, climate, and green transition.

The retreat will also touch on topics like revenue generation, effective leadership communication, and managing diversity and enhancing social cohesion for socio-economic transformation. Additionally, there will be discussions on the future of Pan-Africanism and integration in a changing world, personal mastery, and nurturing leadership from within.

Notable speakers at the retreat include Governors Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, and Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra. President Paul Kagame of Rwanda and former President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya are also scheduled to speak. The facilitators comprise prominent individuals such as ministers, senior advisers, representatives from international organizations, and CEOs from various sectors.

The UNDP, in partnership with the Nigeria Governors' Forum, expects this program to equip participating leaders with enhanced leadership skills, knowledge, and the mindset required to lead others effectively. The agency believes that by nurturing skills like deep listening and self-awareness, leaders will be able to understand, lead, and make informed decisions for the betterment of their constituents.

Effective leadership is crucial for navigating the complexities of the emerging world. State governors have critical roles to play in shaping the future of their states and Nigeria as a whole. By investing in leadership development, the UNDP aims to empower governors to lead the transformation of their states, driving inclusive governance, innovation, and collaborative relationships while addressing emerging challenges.

This leadership retreat signifies the commitment of the UNDP to raise the level of governance not only in Africa but also in other parts of the world. Through this program, Nigerian governors will have the opportunity to acquire the necessary leadership competencies to lead with excellence and foster positive change in their respective states, ultimately contributing to the development of a prosperous Nigeria.
