LAWMA, in collaboration with the Waste and Environmental Sustainability Team (W.E.S.T) and the Bariga Local Council Development Area (LCDA), has launched an innovative waste management initiative called "The Waste Academy 1.0". This program, scheduled to run from August 21st to 31st, 2023, at Pedro Primary School, Famous Bus Stop, Lagos, aims to empower young individuals with crucial skills in waste management and environmental sustainability.

The Waste Academy 1.0 has been strategically timed to coincide with International Youth Day, underscoring the commitment of Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to shaping the next generation of environmental stewards. Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, emphasized the importance of instilling "green skills" in young minds, as it can lead to lasting positive changes in waste management practices and environmental preservation.

Dr. Gbadegesin stated, "Supporting the Waste Academy 1.0 shows LAWMA's commitment to nurturing a culture of environmental responsibility and waste management excellence. This initiative aligns seamlessly with our broader mission of cultivating a greener and more vibrant Lagos. It is in line with LAWMA ACADEMY's mission and vision of raising and building young minds, who can become environment ambassadors and advocate for positive environmental consciousness."

He further encouraged young people to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the event for learning, collaboration, and making meaningful contributions to a sustainable future. The Waste Academy 1.0 aims to equip youth with essential skills that will have a lasting positive impact on their communities and the environment.

Suliyat Ogun, the convener of the Waste Academy 1.0, is herself a graduate of the LAWMA Academy and Senior Special Adviser on Environmental Health to the Chairman of Bariga LCDA. With her profound understanding of waste management, Ogun aims to provide a platform for young people to channel their creativity and innovation towards addressing pressing environmental challenges.

The Waste Academy 1.0 offers a diverse range of activities including arts and crafts, field trips, film screenings, networking opportunities, upcycling workshops, exhibitions, and community engagement. These activities will engage and educate participants, equipping them with practical knowledge and hands-on expertise in waste management while fostering a culture of environmental responsibility.

Participants of the Waste Academy 1.0 have expressed their enthusiasm for the program. Temilola Olukunle, a secondary school student and beneficiary of the initiative, commended the convener, mentioning that he had discovered a promising career path through the Waste Academy. Mrs. Ojomu Taiwo, a youth corps member, shared that the event had raised her hope of venturing into the business of recycling.

LAWMA Academy, the educational hub of the Lagos Waste Management Authority, was established three years ago with the specific goal of teaching waste management and environmental sustainability to children and youth. It aims to cultivate a generation of environment ambassadors.
