The Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has cautioned contractors working on the rehabilitation of 135 roads in Abuja against contract variations. Speaking at the project's inauguration, Wike stressed that the project must be completed within six months, and there would be no tolerance for variations in the contract.
Addressing the contractors, Wike warned against attempting to manipulate the engineering services to seek variations in the contract. He emphasized that any attempt to do so would be futile.
The Minister assured the contractors that the FCT Administration has the funds available to promptly pay them for their work. He stated unequivocally that there would be no outstanding debts for the project.
Furthermore, Wike made it clear that any paperwork requesting reconsideration or presenting unanticipated issues would not be entertained. He stated that all aspects of the project had been anticipated and adequately considered.
Expressing his commitment to ensure the success of the project, Wike called on residents to support the contractors throughout the rehabilitation process. He acknowledged that developmental projects often come with a temporary inconvenience for the residents, but he urged their understanding and cooperation.
The Minister solicited the support of traditional rulers in mobilizing youths and residents to support the contractors. Wike recognized the constructive cooperation expressed by the Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council, Christopher Maikalangu, in working with the FCT Administration for the benefit of FCT residents.
The Minister of State for FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, highlighted significant achievements already recorded in the capital city's transformation within just three weeks of Mr. Project's tenure. She reassured residents that streetlights, sanitation, and road infrastructure issues were being addressed to enhance their quality of life.
Speaking on behalf of the FCT Administration, the Permanent Secretary, Olusade Adesola, detailed the scope of the project. The rehabilitation and resurfacing of 135 existing roads, as well as remedial works on bridges, will significantly impact the city's residents.
Ahmed Hadi, the Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority, explained that a considerable number of roads developed since the 1980s had deteriorated and required rehabilitation. He outlined the rehab process, which includes scarification, removal of existing asphalt, and asphalt overlay.
When completed, the project's benefits will include enhanced traffic flow, reduced travel time, and improved road safety within the affected districts of Wuse, Garki, Maitama, and Asokoro, covering a total of 42 kilometers of roads.
The Chairman of the House Committee on FCT, Muktar Betara, expressed confidence in Wike's ability to deliver on the transformative agenda for the FCT. Betara pledged the committee's support to ensure the success of the Minister's initiatives.
The Ona of Abaji, Alhaji Adamu Yunusa, expressed gratitude to the Minister for his commitment to delivering the dividends of democracy to residents and assured him of the traditional council's support.
In conclusion, the Minister's warning against contract variations sends a clear message to the contractors responsible for rehabilitating Abuja's roads. With the assurance of prompt payment and support from residents and traditional rulers, the project is expected to be completed within the agreed timeline, ultimately resulting in improved transportation infrastructure for the FCT.
