In a tragic turn of events, a boat accident near the Jabba and Kainji dams in Niger State has claimed the lives of several individuals, leaving many others missing. The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has reported that 24 bodies have been recovered so far, while 30 people have been rescued.

The incident took place on Sunday morning, when a boat carrying around 100 individuals, mostly farmers, capsized while they were crossing the River Niger between the Gbajibo area of Mokwa local government.

Since the time of the accident, the search and rescue efforts have been ongoing, with NSEMA collaborating with local divers and the Mokwa local government authority to locate the missing persons. Unfortunately, the operation has not been able to locate over 40 people who remain unaccounted for.

The victims, hailing from the Gbajibo, Ekwa, and Yankyade communities, were on their way to their farms on the other side of the River Niger when the tragedy struck.

Making a statement about the incident, the Acting Director-General of NSEMA, Garba Salihu, expressed their commitment to conducting a thorough search and rescue operation. He assured the affected residents and the families of the victims that every effort would be made to locate and rescue any survivors.

The governor of Niger State, Mr Umaru Bago, expressed shock and sorrow over the unfortunate accident. He described it as a terrible and distasteful occurrence that has deeply affected the affected communities and offered his heartfelt condolences.

Furthermore, the governor stressed the importance of adhering to safety measures, such as wearing life jackets and avoiding overcrowding in boats. These precautions, he emphasized, could significantly reduce the risk of such accidents in the future.

As the search and rescue operation continues, the families of the victims are left in mourning and grappling with the loss of their loved ones. The recovered bodies of the farmers have been mournfully laid to rest, commemorated with a funeral ceremony in their honor.

This tragic boat accident serves as a solemn reminder of the inherent dangers faced by individuals who rely on water transportation for their livelihoods or other essential activities. Efforts must be made to improve safety measures and ensure that boating practices are carried out with the utmost precaution in order to prevent future incidents.
