Nigerian Authorities Issue Flood Alerts to 13 Northern States

ABUJA, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Nigerian authorities on Wednesday issued flood alerts to 13 out of the 19 northern states in the country, calling for vigilance and emergency response plans to be activated to prevent impending disaster.

The alert comes as a proactive measure to mitigate potential flooding disasters and ensure the safety of communities in view of the heavy rainfall witnessed across the northern region, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said in a statement issued in the southwestern part of the country.

According to NEMA, the flood alerts were issued after due consultation with relevant stakeholders and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency. The affected states include Kebbi, Niger, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa, Plateau, Taraba, and Benue.

NEMA urged state emergency management agencies, whose offices are situated within the northern region, to remain alert and have their emergency response plans activated. The agency also advised local residents to avoid flood-prone areas and observe precautionary measures to minimize risks.

Efforts are underway to establish emergency response teams and temporary shelters in vulnerable communities. The agency stressed the importance of adequate preparation, including early warning systems and a coordinated response to the floods. NEMA has also called on citizens to report any emergency situation promptly.

Furthermore, NEMA appealed to residents to maintain proper hygiene and cautioned against arbitrary dumping of refuse or waste into drainage channels, as this contributes to the occurrence of flash floods. The agency emphasized the need for collective responsibility and urged citizens to take proactive steps to protect their lives and properties.
