In a bid to address the socio-political challenges faced by women in Lagos, the First Lady, Dr (Mrs) Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, made a passionate call for unity among women. She stressed the importance of women's societies going beyond mere trips and gatherings by exhibiting hard work and dedication in tackling the prevalent issues.
During an induction and award ceremony organized by the National Council of Women Societies Nigeria (NCWS) in Lagos, new executive members were appointed. The event also honored exemplary individuals with awards of excellence.
Dr Sanwo-Olu emphasized the need for women to support and uplift one another, as they hold the power to effect positive change. Acknowledging the vital role of women in advocating for the voiceless, she called for unity and an unwavering commitment to addressing the challenges faced by women.
She stated, "Women must lift each other. We must unite. We are the voice for the voiceless. There are so many people that need our assistance. Women must be lifted up. One power that we have is our mouth and tongue, and we will use it constructively to develop our country and state. We will remain beautiful women that have brains."
The Lagos First Lady commended the NCWS for its steadfast commitment to advancing women's issues. She urged the newly appointed executives not to relent in their efforts to empower women economically and socially.
Alhaja Ajao, the newly appointed president of the NCWS in Lagos, promised to serve diligently and peacefully alongside other executive members, with the aim of uplifting women in the state.
The ceremony also included the presentation of awards of excellence to distinguished individuals who have made significant contributions to society. Among the awardees were the First Lady of Lagos state, Mrs. Sanwo-Olu, Alhaja Lateefat Gbajabiamila, the mother of the Chief of Staff to the President, Mr. Femi Gbajamila, and the Wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat.
Dame Abimbola Fashola, the wife of the former Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola, and Princess Sarah Sosan, a former Deputy Governor, were also honored for their contributions.
Women's empowerment and addressing socio-political challenges are critical for the development of a progressive society. The call for unity among women in Lagos, in order to take on these challenges, is a significant step towards a more inclusive and equitable future.
