xxxThe Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has declared that it will not engage the Western Nigerian Security Network (WNSN), also known as Amotekun, in the conduct of the forthcoming local government election. The decision was announced by the chairman of OYSIEC, Isiaka Olagunju, during the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Correspondents Chapel's guest platform programme in Ibadan.To ensure a smooth and secure election process, OYSIEC will be working closely with the police, army, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), and the correctional center. According to Olagunju, these institutions have been visited, and discussions on their involvement in the election have taken place.The exclusion of Amotekun, which was established to assist in combating crime and maintaining peace in the Southwest region, is in a bid to avoid any perception of intimidation or bias towards the people during the electoral process. OYSIEC aims to maintain a neutral and unbiased stance by relying on established security agencies.Olagunju assured the public that OYSIEC is fully prepared for the election and will engage approximately 18,000 personnel to oversee the polling units effectively. With over 6,000 polling units in Oyo State, the commission plans to have three personnel present at each unit.The OYSIEC chairman also stated that the screening process for political party candidates will commence soon.
