EDO-APC Diaspora Council Condemns Local Government Election in Edo State
The EDO-APC Diaspora Council has expressed disappointment and condemned the recently conducted local government election in Edo State, Nigeria. The council criticized the process, citing a lack of transparency, late start, and absence of result sheets. They called for a clean and legitimate election in 2024 to ensure a fair representation of the people's will.

Abuja, Sept. 4, 2023 - The EDO-APC Diaspora Council, headed by Dr. Legend Asuelime, has strongly denounced the local government election held in Edo State this past Saturday, labeling it as a sham and far from being a free and fair poll.

In a statement released to the press on Sunday in Abuja, Dr. Asuelime expressed his disappointment with the conduct of the election, accusing Governor Godwin Obaseki and the election commission of disregarding the rule of law, democracy, and the people's voice.

"We, the leaders of EDO-APC Diaspora Council, stand united with our party leaders in the state to reject and condemn this charade of a supposed democratic process," Dr. Asuelime stated.

The council believed that instead of organizing an election, the state government should have simply appointed caretaker committees for the councils, thereby saving public resources.

"It is a disgrace and an affront to allocate a significant amount of funds to the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission for the purpose of an election and then fail to provide the necessary logistical support or a conducive environment for the conduct of the exercise," Dr. Asuelime lamented.

According to Dr. Asuelime, the election faced several setbacks from the onset. It started late, and when the ballot materials finally arrived in the late afternoon, there were no result sheets available. This indicated that regardless of the party chosen by the people, their votes would essentially count for nothing.

"What we witnessed was a sham that should have no bearing on our developing democracy," he added.

The EDO-APC Diaspora Council urged the electorate to be prepared to vote out the ruling party, the PDP, during the 2024 governorship election in the state. They emphasized their commitment to reclaiming the state through a free and fair election.

"A clean victory is what we hope for because it brings joy and satisfaction, knowing that it has been obtained with legitimacy," Dr. Asuelime highlighted.

It is worth noting that the Edo Independent Electoral Commission declared candidates from the ruling PDP as winners of the chairmanship election in all 18 local government areas of the state.
