The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has revealed plans to reintroduce monthly sanitation in Abuja as part of efforts to maintain a clean and hygienic city. During a meeting with contractors responsible for various projects in the FCT, Wike announced that at least two Saturdays in a month would be designated for sanitation activities.
Wike acknowledged the importance of cooperation from residents in achieving a clean environment, emphasizing that every individual must contribute to refuse disposal. He urged residents to dedicate three hours on a Saturday to clearing refuse from their homes and bringing it out for proper evacuation and disposal.
Addressing the issue of streetlights, Wike mentioned that improvements had been made, though more work remained. He assured the public that the entire city would eventually be well-lit, ensuring safety and security for residents and visitors alike.
Regarding the Abuja Master Plan, the minister acknowledged the need to rectify distortions. He explained that the government was reviewing the areas designated as parks and greens, as well as identifying plots that had been built on contrary to the original plan. Wike affirmed the government's commitment to combatting undeveloped lands that become breeding grounds for criminals.
Recognizing the importance of addressing the satellite towns' needs, Wike stated that the ministry would prioritize improvements in these areas. While acknowledging the funding constraints, he assured that interventions would be made progressively, one satellite town at a time, based on the availability of funds.
In the 2022 national budget, the FCT was allocated N15 billion, which falls far short of the required amount for the multitude of contracts. Wike stressed the need for prudent spending and careful prioritization of projects to maximize the impact of the allocated funds.
The reintroduction of monthly sanitation holds promise for creating a cleaner and healthier Abuja. By actively involving residents in refuse disposal activities, the FCT aims to instill a sense of collective responsibility and promote a cleaner environment. As the government addresses the issues of undeveloped lands, street lighting, and satellite town improvements, the overall goal is to transform Abuja into a safer, more aesthetically pleasing, and functional capital city.
