NECA Urges Government to Respect ILO Convention for Peaceful Industrial Harmony
The Nigeria Employers' Consultative Association (NECA) has called on the government to uphold the provisions of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Convention 087 in order to maintain peaceful industrial relations in the country. This comes in response to recent events where state governments have been interfering with workers' unions, which could have negative consequences for Nigeria's international standing in the labour community.

The Nigeria Employers' Consultative Association (NECA) has urged the Nigerian government to uphold the provisions of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Convention 087, which guarantees the freedom of association and protection of workers' rights. NECA's Director-General, Mr Adewale-Smatt Oyerinde, expressed concern over recent events where some state governments in the country have been interfering with workers' unions.

Oyerinde emphasized that this interference could have serious consequences for Nigeria's industrial relations system and its reputation within the international labour community. He highlighted that Nigeria currently holds the position of chairman of the ILO Governing Body, making it crucial for the government to demonstrate its commitment to upholding labour rights.

As a respectable nation within the ILO, it is worrisome that Nigeria, both at the federal and state levels, may be violating the provisions of Convention 087. This violation not only goes against international labour standards but also contravenes Nigeria's own laws, including Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees the freedom of association.

NECA called upon the Minister of Labour and Employment, Mr Simon Lalong, to take decisive action in addressing this issue. The association emphasized that Lalong's experience and goodwill are essential in rectifying the situation and preventing further disruption in Nigeria's industrial relations practice.

The NECA Director-General further stressed that failure to address this anomaly could result in Nigeria being ridiculed within the international community. It is crucial for the government to respect the principles and values enshrined in the ILO Convention and protect the rights of workers and employers alike.

Peaceful industrial harmony is vital for the socio-economic development of any nation. When workers' rights are protected, it fosters a conducive environment for businesses to thrive, thereby contributing to overall economic growth. By respecting the ILO Convention, Nigeria can demonstrate its commitment to building a strong and harmonious relationship between employers and employees.

Achieving peaceful industrial relations also strengthens Nigeria's position as a key player in the global labour community. By upholding international labour standards, Nigeria can showcase its dedication to creating a fair and equitable working environment, aligning with the values of the ILO and promoting positive relations with other countries.

The government's action, or lack thereof, has far-reaching implications for workers, employers, and Nigeria as a whole. NECA's call for the government to respect the ILO Convention should serve as a wake-up call to address the current situation promptly. Preserving peaceful industrial harmony is not just a legal obligation; it is a fundamental element for sustainable development and a thriving economy.
