Lagos State Announces Commencement Date for Blue Line Rail Operations
The Lagos State government has announced that the Blue Line Rail will begin commercial operations on September 4, 2023. The Managing Director of LAMATA, Engr. Abimbola Akinajo, confirmed the commencement date and outlined the initial schedules and fares for passengers. The electric train will run on locomotive for the first four weeks to allow passengers to familiarize themselves with the rail system. Strict security measures have been put in place, including extensive CCTV surveillance and the presence of plainclothes security agents. The Blue Line Rail will cover a distance of 27.5 km from Marina to Okokomaiko, with 13 stations along the way.

Lagos State is set to revolutionize its transportation system with the launch of the Blue Line Rail. The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced that commercial operations for the rail line will commence on Monday, September 4, 2023.

The Managing Director of LAMATA, Engr. Abimbola Akinajo, shared the exciting news during a press conference held at the Marina Station of the Blue Line Rail in Lagos. Akinajo further revealed that the inauguration of the train service will be attended by Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who will take the inaugural ride at 9 a.m. on September 4, giving other passengers the green light to begin their journeys.

The start of operations will be gradual, with partial passenger services starting on Tuesday. During the initial phase, the train will operate during the morning and afternoon peak periods. Passengers can expect 12 trips per day, with plans to increase the frequency to 76 trips daily over time. The Blue Line Rail will run schedule services from 6:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. for the morning peak and from 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. for the evening peak.

It's important to note that the train will run on locomotive power for the first four weeks to ensure the electric system synchronizes seamlessly with the physical infrastructure. This approach allows passengers to get acquainted with the rail system before full electric operation commences.

Engr. Akinajo emphasized the significance of passenger safety during this period. Although the train will run on locomotive, the tracks will remain energized, and passengers will not be allowed to cross them. Akinajo also highlighted that approximately 150,000 passengers are expected to utilize the train service daily, marking a significant step towards easing traffic congestion in Lagos.

Regarding fares, a full journey from Marina to Mile 2 will cost N750. However, Governor Sanwo-Olu's recent 50% discount on all Lagos public transportation rides will also apply to the Blue Line Rail. This means the highest fare for a full trip will be N375, making it an affordable and convenient option for travelers.

To access the train service, passengers will need to use a Cowry card, as cash payments or paper tickets will not be accepted. LAMATA aims to streamline the payment process and facilitate efficient boarding procedures through the use of the card system.

Engr. Akinajo emphasized the commitment to passenger safety and security. Extensive security measures have been implemented, including the installation of over 300 CCTV cameras throughout the entire Blue Line Rail network and more than 30 cameras specifically monitoring the tracks. Plainclothes security agents and officers of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps will be present on trains at all times to ensure the well-being of passengers.

Passengers are advised against eating and drinking on the train to uphold cleanliness and prevent any inconvenience to other passengers. Vandalism will not be tolerated, and anyone engaging in criminal activities will be arrested and handed over to the police.

The Blue Line Rail stretches over 27.5 km from Marina to Okokomaiko and will comprise 13 stations. The end-to-end journey is estimated to take approximately 35 minutes, providing a swift and efficient mode of transportation for residents and commuters in Lagos State.

The commencement of the Blue Line Rail reflects the Lagos State government's commitment to modernizing the transportation sector and improving the overall quality of life for its residents. With the introduction of this state-of-the-art rail system, Lagos is poised to experience enhanced connectivity, reduced traffic congestion, and increased efficiency in commuting.
