NCC Receives Commendation for Telecom Consumer Protection Initiatives
The Lamido of Adamawa, Dr. Muhammadu Mustapha, has commended the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for its telecom consumer protection initiatives, including the recent Village Square Dialogue (VSD) in Yola, Adamawa State. The event provided an opportunity for telecom consumers and businesses to interact directly with the regulator, addressing their concerns and receiving face-to-face responses. The Lamido also urged the NCC to explore further measures to reduce telecom service costs and improve accessibility across the country.

The Lamido of Adamawa, Dr. Muhammadu Mustapha, has applauded the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for its commitment to protecting telecom consumers through various initiatives. One of the recent initiatives gaining commendation is the Village Square Dialogue (VSD) held in Yola, Adamawa State.

Addressing telecom consumers and businesses, the royal father's representative, Prof. Abubakar Tahir, expressed gratitude to the NCC for its dedication to consumer education and enlightenment. He emphasized the significance of the VSD in providing a platform for individuals and businesses to directly engage with the regulator and seek clarification on telecom-related matters.

"We must commend the NCC for the great work it has been doing in the area of consumer education and enlightenment. The NCC leadership has taken the issue of consumer information very central, and we thank you for bringing this laudable initiative to the good people of Adamawa," Prof. Abubakar Tahir stated.

While appreciating the efforts made by the NCC, the Lamido suggested that the Commission should consider exploring additional measures to further reduce the cost of telecom services and ensure their availability in remote areas.

"The Commission should kindly look inwards and ensure that all communities in the country continue to enjoy cheaper, better, qualitative, and more accessible telecommunications services," he urged.

In response to the commendation, Alkasim Umar, the Director of Consumer Affairs at the NCC, reiterated the Commission's commitment to protecting and educating telecom consumers while creating a favorable environment for service providers to deliver quality services.

Umar highlighted various consumer-centric initiatives undertaken by the NCC, including the introduction of harmonized short codes for simplified access to consumer service types across different networks. These short codes enable consumers to load airtime, check balance, contact call centers, and monitor data plans, among other functionalities.

He also reminded consumers about the availability of the NCC Toll-Free Number (622) for reporting telecom service-related issues, the 112 Emergency Number for seeking assistance during emergencies, and the Do-Not-Disturb (DND) 2442 Short Code for blocking unsolicited messages.

Umar emphasized the importance of information and education in empowering telecom consumers, as it enables them to understand their rights, clarifies matters of concern, and informs their expectations from telecom service providers.

"When telecom consumers are duly informed and educated, they are protected against unfair practices by service providers," Umar explained, stressing the significance of consumer awareness in the digital era.

The Village Square Dialogue and other outreach events organized by the NCC serve as platforms for face-to-face interaction between the Commission, service providers, and consumers. They help address consumer issues and promote transparency in the industry.

As the NCC continues to receive accolades for its telecom consumer protection initiatives, it remains committed to its mandate of safeguarding the rights and interests of consumers across the country.
