The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) have made remarkable strides in their commitment to combating terrorism and criminal activities within the country. According to the Director of Defence Media Operation (DMO), Major General Edward Buba, the troops have succeeded in neutralizing a total of 814 terrorists in various operations carried out from June to August 2023.
These operations have not only targeted terrorist groups, but they have also focused on curbing other forms of criminal activities, including kidnappings, armed robbery, oil theft, and more. As a result, the AFN has managed to arrest over 1,300 suspected criminals, comprising 42 kidnappers, 231 collaborators, 33 armed robbers, 325 militants, 27 rail vandals, 73 gunrunners, and 191 suspected oil thieves. Additionally, 721 kidnapped hostages have been rescued, bringing relief to their families and communities.
The success of these operations can be attributed to the dedicated efforts of the AFN, who have utilized offensive strategies and conducted airstrikes to inflict heavy blows on the terrorist groups and criminal networks. According to General Buba, these actions have significantly weakened the capabilities of these groups and disrupted their operations.
Furthermore, the AFN's efforts have led to the recovery of various weapons, ammunition, and equipment. The troops have confiscated a total of 501 weapons, including AK47 rifles, revolvers, fabricated rifles, pistols, pump-action guns, and more. Other seized items include explosives, grenades, ammunition, bulletproof vests, vehicles, motorcycles, mobile phones, radios, and camouflage attire.
General Buba highlighted that the AFN's operations extend to all six geopolitical zones of Nigeria, ensuring that no region is left vulnerable to insurgent activities. The South-South geopolitical zone, in particular, witnessed significant progress, with the arrest of several individuals involved in oil theft. The troops recovered millions of liters of stolen crude oil and illegally refined petroleum products worth approximately N4 billion in total.
In light of these achievements, General Buba emphasized that the AFN will continue to apply strong military pressure on groups that pose a threat to national security. He urged the remaining terrorists and criminals to surrender their arms and reintegrate into society for a chance at a better life.
It is crucial for Nigerians to support and cooperate with the military in combating terrorism and criminal activities. The collaboration between the AFN and various supportive groups has been instrumental in the success of these operations. Together, they can foster a safer and more secure Nigeria.
