A sensitisation workshop was conducted in Lagos on Thursday to address and eradicate sexual assault in communities. The non-governmental organisation, Woman Advocate Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC), organised the workshop with the primary objectives of creating mechanisms for community accountability and promoting cooperation between female leaders and market leaders in the fight against gender-based violence.
The event, held in collaboration with the Ford Foundation, brought together representatives from various villages in Lagos State, including Iyalode (Association of Women Chiefs) and Iyaloja (Market Leaders). Dr. Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, Executive Director of WARDC, emphasized the importance of involving all women leaders in the fight against sexual violence in their communities.
Dr. Abiola-Akiyode highlighted that the campaign had already covered the three states in the South West region and would continue in August in Ogun State. The workshop aimed to engage female traditional leaders who could play a pivotal role in challenging social norms and ensuring that sexual and gender-based violence is never tolerated.
The discussion, conducted in the local language for better comprehension and participation, focused on eradicating sexual immorality between genders. The initiative aimed to bring female leaders together to deliberate and devise solutions to address gender inequality.
Dr. Abiola-Akiyode urged the female leaders to inform and sensitise their constituents about the need to report incidents of gender-based violence to the police. Representatives from Iyalode General also emphasized the significance of parents teaching their children about sex education and maintaining open lines of communication with them. Chief Mrs. Folashade Tinubu-Ojo is the Iyaloja General.
Ensuring the safety of markets, Chief (Mrs.) Modina Olabisi, Chief (Mrs.) Olasunbo Akinwale Akinremi, and Chief (Mrs.) Folake Adebimpe of Ikorodu stressed the importance of shielding people reporting sexual assault cases from street boys or thugs. They urged everyone to adopt a proactive approach and cooperate with local officials responsible for community development, law enforcement, and youth to address the pressing issue.
