The Kaduna State Government has made a significant stride in addressing the concerns of resident doctors by approving the full implementation of the Consolidated Medical Salary Scale (CONMESS). The decision, announced by Governor Uba Sani, comes after negotiations with striking doctors earlier this year.
The governor acknowledged that during the negotiations, it came to light that resident doctors in the state's ministry of health were receiving only 75% of the 2014 CONMESS. This disparity was highlighted when comparing the salaries of resident doctors in the ministry to those at Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital, who were receiving 100% of the CONMESS.
With the aim of achieving pay parity and boosting doctor's morale, Governor Sani has directed that, from September, the approved CONMESS should be implemented in full for resident doctors in the ministry. This move is not only expected to enhance productivity but also attract more doctors to the state.
Beyond salary adjustments, the governor also revealed that approval has been granted for the recruitment of 89 medical doctors to fill existing gaps in the healthcare workforce. This recruitment initiative was based on recommendations provided by a committee formed to address the healthcare sector's needs.
Speaking about the government's commitment to improving healthcare access, Governor Sani expressed satisfaction with recent efforts in upgrading primary healthcare centers and distributing advanced medical equipment. These initiatives, aimed at ensuring residents have access to quality healthcare within a kilometer radius of their residences, align with the administration's goals.
The Governor also took the opportunity to highlight the state's success in attracting investors, thanks to the business-friendly environment created by his administration. With the influx of investments, the state is poised for further growth and development.
On the security front, Governor Sani expressed gratitude to the security agencies for their support in training both old and newly-recruited members of the state vigilance service. The governor's appreciation extended to Kaduna's residents for their confidence in his administration, and he called for their continued support and cooperation.
