Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, has taken a proactive step towards improving the education sector in the state by holding a meeting with principals and head teachers of public secondary schools. The two-day meeting, which took place on the 3rd and 4th of August 2023, focused on addressing the challenges faced by the education sector in Taraba State and finding practical solutions to ensure the success of the free and compulsory education policy.

During the meeting, Governor Kefas emphasized the importance of education and the need to provide quality education to the children of Taraba State. He acknowledged that the state has immense potential and human capital but lags behind in education compared to other states in Nigeria. Governor Kefas highlighted the alarming rate of out-of-school children and illiteracy in the state, attributing it to the inability of parents to afford school fees for their children.

The Governor's administration is determined to build a new Taraba and provide a bright future for the youth through the implementation of the free education policy. Governor Kefas called for the support of principals and head teachers in ensuring the success of the policy, as they play a crucial role in shaping the education system.

In her welcome speech, Dr. Augustina Goodwin, the Commissioner for Education in Taraba State, described Governor Kefas' administration as an era of hope for children. She emphasized that the free education policy is not a business venture but a means to ensure that children receive quality education without financial constraints.

Dr. Goodwin outlined the goals of the free education policy, which include providing quality teaching and learning, promoting digital literacy, strengthening vocational and technical education programs, engaging parents in education activities, and establishing a monitoring and evaluation team for proper implementation.

The Chairperson of the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), Mrs. Elsie Yaruta, used the opportunity to appeal to the Governor for additional support in schools. She requested the provision of vehicles, training for teachers to enhance their efficiency, and the regularization of casual teachers engaged on a Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) basis.

Mr. Abwage Moseh, the Principal of Government Technical Training School in Beli, commended Governor Kefas for his initiative in implementing the free education policy. He expressed his belief that this policy will put an end to the ongoing struggles between parents and teachers regarding school fees. He urged his colleagues to fully comprehend and embrace the policy for its comprehensive benefits.

With the Governor's dedication, the support of principals and head teachers, and the efforts of the education sector in Taraba State, it is hoped that the free education policy will bring about positive change and lead to the transformation of the state's educational landscape.
