The U.S. Consulate General in Lagos has supported the first Nigerian Climate Resilience Salon, an event that aimed to empower women-led organizations, climate-tech entrepreneurs, and representatives from the public and private sectors to combat climate change in their communities. The salon was organized by Shelley Taylor, a Silicon Valley technology veteran, and Folawemi Umunna, an alumna of the U.S. Department of State's International Visitors Leadership Program.

The event received support from the U.S. Consulate General, which recognizes the importance of including women in climate action. U.S. Consulate Deputy Political and Economic Chief Kenise Hill highlighted that involving women in climate efforts will help create a more sustainable and equitable future for all.

"Climate change is a threat that sees no borders," said Kenise Hill. "We're glad to enable this dialogue that gives voice to women with lived experience of climate impacts and to facilitate their collaboration with women who have developed strategies for creating greater resilience to find shared solutions to our global, shared challenge of climate change."

In her role as the Convener of the Nigerian Climate Resilience Salon, Shelley Taylor explained that climate change exacerbates gender inequalities and developmental gaps. Women often bear the brunt of climate shocks and stresses, which gives them a unique perspective on environmental issues.

The Climate Resilience Salon aims to help women working in nonprofits transform their work into profitable businesses that generate wealth and influence in society. Additionally, it seeks to assist existing climate tech founders in scaling their solutions across regions and borders.

The U.S. Mission supports initiatives that protect the environment, aligning with the central focus on environmental conservation in the Biden-Harris Administration's foreign and domestic policy.

By providing support to the Nigerian Climate Resilience Salon, the U.S. Consulate General is demonstrating the close relationship and cooperation between the people of Nigeria and the United States in addressing the global challenge of climate change.

This salon is part of the Climate Resilience Salon coalition, which organizes events and fosters a supportive network to help women find solutions to climate impacts.

Overall, the U.S. Consulate General's support for the Nigerian Climate Resilience Salon signifies a commitment to empowering women, addressing gender inequalities exacerbated by climate change, and working towards a more sustainable future.
