No fewer than 203 students, comprising 107 National Diploma (ND) and 96 Higher National Diploma (HND) students, recently took the matriculation oath for the 2022/2023 academic session at the Federal College of Forestry in Ibadan. The ceremony marked the official induction of these students into the college, signifying the beginning of their educational journey towards building successful careers in their chosen fields.

During the matriculation lecture, delivered by Prof. Nureni Adewole, a distinguished academic from the Department of Wood Products Engineering at the University of Ibadan, the newly inducted students were advised on how to navigate their future successfully. Prof. Adewole urged them to embrace their matriculation as a significant stepping stone towards discovering their true purpose in life. He reminded them of the tremendous opportunities presented by technology in their studies and encouraged them to make the best use of these resources.

Highlighting the importance of time management and personal growth, Prof. Adewole emphasized the need for the students to carefully select their friends and prioritize their health and well-being. He stressed that the library, while a valuable resource, does not hold the key to greatness. Rather, it is the individual student who must leverage the opportunities the library offers to develop their potential and acquire the skills necessary for success.

The Managing Director of the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN), Dr. Zacharia Buba-Yaduma, also addressed the matriculating students. He urged their parents not to undermine the importance of forestry as a profession and assured them that FRIN would support the academic pursuits of the students. Dr. Buba-Yaduma emphasized the need for parents to provide adequate support to their wards, reaffirming the value of forestry studies.

Additionally, he called on members of the college's staff to invest in the lives of the students, treating them as their own children. This guidance and mentorship play a crucial role in supporting the holistic development of the students. With the newfound freedom of being in charge of their personal lives, the students were encouraged to embrace responsibility and make the best use of their time at the college.

Addressing the students, the Provost of the Federal College of Forestry in Ibadan, Prof. Adeboyin Aderounmu, challenged them to emulate the successful alumni who had passed through the college. She reminded them that their primary purpose in being at the college is to pursue academic excellence. Prof. Aderounmu stressed the need to maintain high standards and avoid engaging in unruly behavior, cult-related activities, examination malpractice, and indecent dressing.

Emphasizing the practical orientation of the college's programs, she reminded the students of the importance of taking their practical sessions seriously. Prof. Aderounmu made it clear that failure in the practical component of any course amounts to failure in the entire course. She also highlighted the institution's commitment to character and learning, stating that only students found worthy in both aspects would receive the college's certificates.

In conclusion, the matriculation ceremony at the Federal College of Forestry in Ibadan marked a significant milestone in the academic journey of the newly admitted students. With the guidance of Prof. Nureni Adewole's matriculation lecture, the support of Dr. Zacharia Buba-Yaduma, and the words of wisdom shared by Prof. Adeboyin Aderounmu, these students are poised to embark on a path of growth and excellence. It is now up to them to seize the opportunities before them, work diligently, and shape a bright future in their chosen fields of study.
