Abuja, Nigeria - 02 September 2023 - The Nigeria Learning Passport (NLP) has reached a significant milestone of 500,000 users, marking a pivotal moment in the nation's education journey. This achievement showcases the government's commitment, in collaboration with UNICEF, to modernizing the educational landscape and ensuring that every Nigerian child can access quality education tailored to their needs.
UNICEF Representative in Nigeria, Ms. Cristian Munduate, commended the government's visionary leadership and dedication to its citizens, stating that reaching 500,000 users is not only a reflection of a successful platform but also a testament to the government's commitment. The goal is to reach 1.5 million NLP users by 2024, and the strategic guidance and involvement of the Federal Ministry of Education (FME) will be invaluable in achieving this milestone.
Digital learning has emerged as the future of education, and Nigeria is paving the way for children and young adults to thrive in a digital economy by investing in the Nigeria Learning Passport. This innovative platform offers interactive simulations and cutting-edge courses in fields such as computer and agricultural science. It empowers the younger generation with the necessary skills to succeed in the future.
Bolade Ayomide, a fourteen-year-old student at the Government Senior College Agege, Lagos, expressed her enthusiasm for the NLP platform, saying, "I stay on top of my class work at home or school, and I like that they are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week on the NLP platform. I was impressed at the selection of courses available on the NLP platform - everything from biology to mathematics to entrepreneurial and secretarial studies."
Not only do students benefit from the NLP, but teachers also have access to invaluable resources for professional development. The platform equips teachers to provide dynamic and interactive learning experiences. Additionally, parents and caregivers can support their child's learning trajectory from an early age with the NLP's playful learning courses.
Launched in March 2022 by the FME and UNICEF, the NLP is powered by Microsoft and actively operates across 18 states in Nigeria. The platform offers over 15,000 curriculum-aligned resources in English, Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba, making it versatile and inclusive. Users can track their progress and achievements through the platform's personal learning record.
The NLP's accessibility has been enhanced through public-private partnerships. Airtel Africa provides free access to the platform on all Airtel devices, ensuring that connectivity is not a barrier to learning. IHS Towers support the initiative by ensuring schools are connected to the internet. These collaborations bridge the digital learning divide, allowing every child, regardless of connectivity access, to have an opportunity to learn.
UNICEF and its partners are investing in necessary infrastructure such as data, computers, smart devices, internet access, and teacher capacity development. Their goal is to bring digital learning to every child and young person in Nigeria. With the continuous support of public-private partnerships, a future where every Nigerian child receives quality education is within reach.
Join UNICEF and its partners on this journey to transform education and create a better future for Nigeria's children.
