In a surprising turn of events at the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and counsel for the All Progressives Congress (APC), Charles Uwensuyi-Edosomwan, faced a shut down by the judges at the Presidential Election Petitions Court. The incident took place during a lengthy judgment delivery by the five-man panel led by Justice Haruna Tsammani.
After eight long hours of judgment delivery, Uwensuyi-Edosomwan, who seemed fatigued, interrupted the court proceedings and requested the judges to be brief and either "dismiss or allow" the petitions of the Labour Party and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, against the victory of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the APC.
However, his interruption was quickly reprimanded by one of the justices who stated, "You don't have to interrupt judgment, we are delivering judgment, and we are still on. You don't have to suggest to us how to deliver judgment."
The incident captured the attention of Nigerians on social media, with varied reactions. While some laughed over the drama, others found Uwensuyi-Edosomwan's behavior to be quite rude and disrespectful.
Renowned critic and ex-aide of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri, took to his social media page to subtly mock the supporters of the Labour Party and Peter Obi. He tweeted, "Obidients, is Peter Obi still coming?"
The judgment delivered by the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) dismissed Peter Obi and the Labour Party's argument that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu failed to score 25% of the votes in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The court ruled that the 25% vote claim in the FCT was irrelevant to the case.
This incident highlights the tensions and expectations surrounding the presidential election petitions. As the court proceedings continue, it remains to be seen how the various petitions will be resolved and how the judgments will shape the course of Nigerian politics.
