Opposition Candidates to Appeal Ruling on Disputed Nigerian Presidential Election

Nigeria's main opposition candidates, Atiku Abubakar of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, have vowed to appeal a tribunal ruling that upheld Bola Tinubu's victory in the disputed presidential election held in February. The candidates have alleged widespread irregularities, ranging from vote fraud to the failure of the electoral agency to post results electronically.

The Presidential Election Petition Court dismissed the petitions lodged by Abubakar and Obi. Atiku Abubakar's lead counsel, Chris Uche, expressed disappointment with the ruling, stating that they had not received justice. Uche echoed Obi's lawyer's sentiments, confirming their plan to file an appeal. He emphasized that the struggle to contest the presidential election outcome would continue.

An appeal at the Supreme Court must be filed within 14 days from the date of the tribunal ruling. Once filed, the apex court is then expected to hear the case within 60 days and deliver its ruling.
