The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, Mr Nyesom Wike, has stated that the FCT Administration (FCTA) is exploring the possibility of providing transportation and food support with the N5 billion palliative received from the Federal Government.
Following a closed-door meeting with contractors handling various projects in the FCT, Wike disclosed that the FCT was not initially included in the N5 billion palliative until he wrote a memo to President Bola Tinubu about the situation. He further mentioned that Tinubu has approved the amount, and the FCT is expected to receive its share soon.
While other states have received N2 billion from the palliative, Wike noted that the FCT is yet to finalize plans on the utilization of the funds. However, he emphasized the significance of considering both food support and transportation, particularly focusing on urban mass transit.
"Are we going to concentrate on food, but we are thinking that the issue of transportation is very, very important, particularly the urban mass transit. People would like to have easy transportation to go to where they want to go, and if you give them rice and they eat the rice today, what about transportation tomorrow?" Wike questioned.
The minister emphasized that the provision of easy transportation is vital to reduce the suffering of the masses, making it a key consideration alongside food support. Efforts are already underway to bring back urban mass transportation as a strategic means of addressing transportation challenges.
The N5 billion palliative was announced by the Federal Government on August 17 to alleviate the impact of the removal of the petrol subsidy. While some states have confirmed receiving N2 billion, others are awaiting the balance of N3 billion.
In considering transportation and food support as areas for intervention, the FCT aims to ensure that the funds are used effectively to alleviate the suffering of the people. As plans unfold, careful consideration will be given to the most impactful ways of utilizing the palliative for the benefit of the masses.
The FCT continues to work towards improving the overall well-being of its residents and enhancing the ease of movement within the territory. By focusing on transportation and food support, the FCTA aims to address immediate needs and contribute to the overall development and sustainability of the region.
