NDPC and CVCNU Partner to Protect Students' Data in Nigerian Universities

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) and the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNU) have announced their collaboration to ensure the protection of students' data within higher institutions of learning. The partnership aims to address the significant exposure of personal information in the Nigerian education sector and enhance data protection measures.

During a working visit to Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner of NDPC in Abuja, the Secretary General of CVCNU, Prof. Yakubu Ochefu, highlighted the need for capacity building among vice chancellors and data officers to comply with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023. Acknowledging the urgency of the matter, Ochefu emphasized the importance of handling students' data appropriately.

Olatunji stressed the unique nature of the education sector, recalling the traditional practice of displaying students' results on notice boards, which often included sensitive personal details such as names, dates of birth, and matriculation numbers.

"Imagine having about 2.6 million students, a lot of things must have been mismanaged and neglected, so it is a very critical sector to us that needs to be handled properly," said Olatunji.

With 264 universities in Nigeria, the collaboration aims to empower vice chancellors and data officers to take on the role of Chief Data Protection Officers in their respective institutions. This new responsibility involves overseeing the secure handling of personal information, including the process of displaying academic results.

Prof. Ochefu further expressed the need for workshops to educate and enlighten members of the CVCNU on data protection practices and compliance with the NDPA. The workshops will serve as platforms for sharing best practices and developing guidelines that align with the legal requirements of data protection in Nigeria.

A Memorandum of Understanding will be signed at a later date to formalize the collaboration between the NDPC and CVCNU. This strategic partnership demonstrates their commitment to safeguarding students' data and ensuring the privacy and security of personal information within Nigerian universities.
