The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) and the Plateau State Government have taken a significant step towards resolving their long-standing tax dispute. In a bid to settle the matter amicably, both parties have decided to withdraw the case from the Tax Appeal Tribunal and establish a four-man technical committee.
The committee comprises two representatives from the Plateau State Internal Revenue Service (PSIRS), namely Paul Yakubu and Markus Chollom, along with Kwatmen Mattias and Oche Samson from the NSITF. The committee has been given a strict deadline of one week to resolve the dispute and deliver a verdict.
As a sign of goodwill, the NSITF has already paid off the backlog of Pay As You Earn Tax (PAYE) for its regional and branch staff members to the tune of N62 million. The payment was made to the PSIRS and demonstrates the NSITF's commitment to clearing its arrears.
The Executive Chairman of the PSIRS, Mr. Jim Pam Waya, expressed his appreciation for the NSITF's renewed dedication to settling the decade-long PAYE remittances issue. He has also accepted the NSITF's proposal for an out-of-court settlement, thereby avoiding further legal proceedings.
Furthermore, Mr. Waya assured the NSITF that the PSIRS would fully support the implementation of the Employee Compensation Scheme (ECS) in order to benefit the workers of Plateau State. He acknowledged the PSIRS's failure to contribute one percent of employee compensation since joining the scheme in 2012 and promised to rectify the situation.
Mr. Waya emphasized the importance of the ECS in providing social security to workers and their dependents in the case of accidents or work-related deaths. He expressed his commitment to reforming the PSIRS and aligning it with programs that promote revenue generation for the state while uplifting the welfare of staff members.
The NSITF's Jos regional manager, Mr. Martins Kuku, called for a harmonious working partnership between the two organizations. He urged the PSIRS to support the resolution of the PAYE dispute, citing the NSITF's efforts to clear the backlog of payments as proof of their commitment to cooperation.
In conclusion, the NSITF and Plateau State Government's decision to withdraw their tax dispute from the Tax Appeal Tribunal and establish a technical committee is a positive step towards resolving the issue. The NSITF's payment of N62 million in PAYE arrears demonstrates its commitment to fulfilling its financial obligations. With the support of the PSIRS, the implementation of the Employee Compensation Scheme can help safeguard the welfare of workers in Plateau State.
