NCC Sensitizes Nigerians on Electronic Fraud and the Need to Protect Personal Information
The Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) conducted a sensitization campaign to educate Nigerians about the risks of electronic fraud and the importance of protecting their personal information. The NCC emphasized the need to safeguard sensitive banking details, such as ATM card information, to prevent falling victim to fraudsters. With electronic fraud on the rise, this campaign aimed to empower individuals with the knowledge and awareness necessary to avoid online scams and safeguard their finances.

In a bid to protect Nigerian citizens from the increasing threat of electronic fraud, the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) organized a sensitization campaign under the theme, "Shine Your Eyes - No Fall Mugu." This consumer-centric initiative aimed to educate Nigerians about the risks associated with online scams and emphasized the importance of safeguarding personal information.

The Director of Consumer Affairs at the NCC, Alhaji Umar Alkassim, explained that individuals often become victims of electronic fraud due to their own actions. By willingly disclosing sensitive banking information to fraudsters, unsuspecting Nigerians expose themselves to potential financial losses.

The various methods employed by fraudsters were highlighted during the campaign. Fake alerts, unauthorized deductions from bank accounts, and deceitful text messages promising lottery wins were among the commonly observed schemes to steal personal information. Alhaji Alkassim also cautioned against sharing personal identification numbers (PINs) and passwords with others, including friends, POS agents, or banking staff.

To further educate Nigerians on how to protect their finances and personal information, Alhaji Alkassim provided valuable advice. He outlined five crucial pieces of information present on an ATM card that should never be shared with anyone. These include the name written on the card, the 16-digit card number, the three-digit CVV number on the back of the card, the card's validity date, and, most importantly, the PIN.

Alhaji Alkassim emphasized that disclosing any of these details could directly lead to electronic fraud and urged individuals to remain vigilant. He also highlighted the alarming fact that losing one's mobile phone to fraudsters could result in unauthorized access to bank accounts, as they may utilize stolen identities and personal information to gain illicit entry.

Recognizing the collaborative effort required to combat electronic fraud effectively, the NCC pledged to work closely with relevant stakeholders such as the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC).

As technology continues to evolve, individuals must remain proactive in protecting their online security and financial well-being. By adhering to the NCC's advice and safeguarding personal information, Nigerians can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to electronic fraud.
