The Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has called on the federal government and the Works Ministry to introduce new models of delivering federal roads in the Southeast region. The Governor made this appeal during a courtesy visit by the Minister for Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, at the Governor's Lodge in Amawbia.
According to Governor Soludo, all the federal roads in Anambra State have failed, and the current system of awarding road contracts from Abuja across the country cannot guarantee successful project delivery. He emphasized the need for a different approach, suggesting a combination of financing options or the implementation of an infrastructure tax credit scheme.
In his statement, Governor Soludo expressed his appreciation to President Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Engr. Umahi as the Minister of Works. However, he reminded everyone that politics does not always deliver what one deserves but rather what one bargains for.
The Governor highlighted the significance of repairing the Onitsha Owerri road alongside the construction of the Second Niger bridge. He explained that without addressing the state of the Onitsha Owerri road, the impact of the new bridge might not be fully realized.
In a bid to present an accurate picture of the situation, Governor Soludo requested the possibility of accompanying the Minister on an assessment tour of the bad roads in the state. He specifically mentioned the Anambra West-Kogi road, which, when constructed, could significantly reduce travel time to Abuja to just three hours.
Engr. Dave Umahi expressed his disappointment with the contractor handling the Enugu-Onitsha Express road. He also expressed a vote of no-confidence in the consultants. To tackle these challenges, the Minister summoned the contractors to find practical ways to move forward.
Umahi further suggested the use of concrete pavements for road construction, ensuring longevity and durability. He assured Governor Soludo that they would explore innovative methods and think outside the box when it comes to reassigning and improving road infrastructure in Anambra State.
