The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has commenced the implementation of a presidential directive to close the Nigeria-Niger border. The decision comes in response to the recent overthrow of a democratically elected government in the neighboring country, Niger Republic.
Adewale Adeniyi, the acting Comptroller-General of Customs, reiterated that this exercise is not intended to impose hardship on Nigerians. Instead, it is in accordance with a decision made by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), of which Nigerian President Tinubu is the Chairperson. During a visit to the Illela Border Station, Adeniyi expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance observed among residents in the area.
