Nigeria Medical Association Advises Nigerians on the Importance of Eating Right for Healthy Living
The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA-FCT) elders forum has advised Nigerians, especially the youth, on the importance of eating right for healthy living. They emphasized that maintaining a proper diet not only controls life expectancy but also helps prevent diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, cardiac arrest, and kidney failure. The elders emphasized the need to relate properly to the kind of food consumed, as every stage of life requires specific nutritional needs. Furthermore, they urged Nigerians to consider food as a form of medicine and a key element in maintaining a healthy and long life.

The Nigeria Medical Association, (NMA-FCT) elders forum, recently organized a meeting tagged "A Day Out with the Elders" to express the importance of eating right for healthy living. Dr Udofia Enefiok, the Acting Chairman of the association's elders forum, provided essential insights with regard to food and its impact on overall health and life expectancy. The meeting was a part of the 2023 Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the association.

During the meeting, Dr Udofia Enefiok advised Nigerians, especially the youth, against consuming food in an indiscriminate manner solely because it is readily available. He stressed that individuals must establish a proper relationship with the food they consume. According to him, different stages of life require specific types of food, and consuming the same quantity and types of food throughout one's life can potentially lead to more harm than good in older age.

Dr Udofia Enefiok emphasized that God created various types of food with specific purposes for the sustenance of human life. His advice centered on the importance of understanding these foods and using them appropriately to maintain good health. Unfortunately, many individuals fail to relate well to the foods they consume, indulging in food preferences based on personal desires rather than nutritional necessities.

Dr Udofia Enefiok highlighted the consequences of consuming unhealthy food, stating that certain deaths and sicknesses arise from poor dietary choices. While some deaths may be due to natural or unforeseen circumstances, many result from the food people consume. Therefore, it becomes every individual's responsibility to properly relate to and consume their meals to sustain a healthy life.

The cells in our bodies serve as the foundation of life, and consuming quality and nutritional food helps maintain their health. Dr Udofia Enefiok further revealed that consuming the right food aids in the proper functioning of vital organs such as the heart, kidneys, and more. Eating the right food can also prevent diseases like hypertension, diabetes, cardiac arrest, and kidney failure, which are commonly associated with poor dietary choices.

Dr Charles Ugwuanyi, the Chairman of NMA-FCT, emphasized that the meeting aimed to enable young Nigerians, especially young doctors, to learn from the wisdom of experienced elders in the medical profession. He encouraged the youth to view food as a form of medicine, emphasizing the significance of lifestyle medicine.

The Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Olufemi Babalola, echoed the sentiments expressed by the NMA-FCT elders. He urged Nigerians to prioritize healthy eating habits and avoid diseases associated with poor diet choices. Obesity, cancer, diabetes, heart attack, stroke, and many other health conditions can often be attributed to unhealthy eating habits.

In conclusion, the advice from the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA-FCT) elders forum provides valuable insights into the significance of eating right for healthy living. Proper nutrition not only controls life expectancy but also plays a crucial role in preventing various diseases. Nigerians, especially the youth, are urged to establish a strong relationship with food and recognize the specific nutritional requirements for each stage of life. Embracing healthy eating habits not only sustains our lives but also promotes overall well-being and longevity.
