The Benue Commission for Peace and Reconciliation (BCPR) is at the forefront of efforts to end the longstanding crises in the state, particularly the conflicts between farmers and herders. The Director General of BCPR, Josephine Habba, announced that the Commission is in the process of developing a 4-year Strategic Plan to address these challenges and promote peace.
The Strategic Plan aims to provide workable solutions to end the conflicts and facilitate healing and reconciliation among the affected parties. It will also focus on policies that can restore broken bridges and mend relationships between different communities in Benue.
As Josephine Habba explained, "The mandate of the Commission is for reconciliation and peace. We want to see broken bridges mended, people who have been fighting sitting on the same table, and children playing together again. Our goal is to restore the harmony and coexistence that once existed among the diverse communities in Benue."
The Strategic Plan will address not only the farmers/herders conflicts but also internal crises within the state. It aims to create an environment conducive for farmers to return to their farms, children to go back to school, and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to safely return to their ancestral homes.
Josephine Habba emphasized the importance of having appropriate policies in place to bring about these changes. The Commission will work closely with the government to advise on policies that will facilitate peace, reconciliation, and productivity in Benue.
The development of the Strategic Plan is a collaborative effort involving various stakeholders. A two-day Strategic Consultative workshop was organized by the Commission in collaboration with International Alert to gather input and perspectives from religious leaders, traditional rulers, women groups, security agencies, technocrats, and civil society organizations.
By involving all relevant parties and ensuring representation from every part of Benue, the Commission aims to create a comprehensive and inclusive Strategic Plan that addresses the specific needs and aspirations of the people.
Furthermore, the Commission recognizes the role of the media in promoting peace and preventing the escalation of conflicts. It will work closely with victims of crises and media organizations to ensure that reporting is balanced, sensitive, and does not exacerbate existing tensions.
The development of a 4-year Strategic Plan by the Benue Commission for Peace and Reconciliation is a significant step towards resolving the ongoing crises and building a more harmonious and peaceful society in Benue. It signifies a commitment to finding lasting solutions, promoting reconciliation, and healing the wounds inflicted by conflicts.
