Coalition of Civil Society Organizations Calls for Justice in the Murder of Female Varsity Student in Ekiti State
A coalition of civil society organizations in Ekiti State has written an open letter to Governor Biodun Oyebanji and the Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Command, calling for justice in the murder of a female varsity student. The group condemned the heinous crime against the 200-level student and urged the authorities to swiftly bring the perpetrators to book. They also highlighted the need for comprehensive measures to enhance the safety and security of all students, particularly female students, within and around educational institutions.

In a resounding demand for justice, a coalition of civil society organizations in Ekiti State has urged Governor Biodun Oyebanji and the Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Command, to take decisive action in the murder case of a female university student.

The Gender Mobile Initiative (GMI), Balm in Gilead Foundation for Sustainable Development (BIGIF), International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), National Council of Women Societies (NCWS), Gender Relevance Promotion Initiative (GRIP), and National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) all united in a powerful open letter titled "Condemnation of the Heinous Crime Against a Female Student of FUOYE and the Urgent Need to Set the Wheel of Justice in Motion".

The coalition expressed their profound grief and outrage at the abhorrent act that not only shattered the life of Atanda Modupe Deborah, a 200-level student at the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), but also shook the very foundations of the society.

The murder and mutilation of the young student struck fear into the hearts of students, particularly women and girls, who should feel safe pursuing their education. The traumatic incident has far-reaching consequences, especially on the mental health of the students and their parents.

The coalition applauded the swift action taken by the Police Command in arresting the prime suspects connected to the heinous crime. They recognized their commitment to ensuring justice for the victim as a step in the right direction.

However, the coalition emphasized the need for all necessary authorities, including the governor and the Commissioner of Police, to spare no effort in ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to book and face the full force of the law.

Furthermore, comprehensive measures need to be implemented to enhance the safety and security of all students, specifically female students, within and around educational institutions. The coalition highlighted the collective responsibility of creating an environment where students can pursue their dreams without fear of violence.

The coalition stressed the importance of providing essential infrastructural facilities that ensure a well-lit and secure environment for all students. They urged the management of FUOYE to cooperate with the relevant authorities in bringing the perpetrator(s) to justice.

In conclusion, the coalition extended their deepest condolences to the grieving family and stood in unwavering solidarity with the entire student body of FUOYE. They called for unity within the community to ensure such abominable acts never find a place in society, and justice is vigorously served.

While violence should never be the cost of education for girls and women, this tragic incident serves as a reminder of the urgent need to prioritize the safety and protection of all students.
