In a recent statement, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the apex Igbo socio-political organisation, voiced its dismay over the perceived marginalization of the South East region in the ministerial appointments made by President Bola Tinubu. The organisation pointed out that while the South East was allocated only five ministerial positions, other zones had significantly higher representation, with some having as many as nine or ten ministers.
The Ohanaeze Ndigbo firmly believes in the unity of Nigeria, but it argues that achieving this unity requires an environment of fairness, justice, and equity. The group demands these principles be applied to all ethnic groups in Nigeria, including the Igbo. It highlighted the historical context of states and geopolitical zones, emphasizing that the Igbo were not adequately represented in the process of their creation by military administrations.
The South East currently faces numerous challenges due to its political and economic disadvantages. The reduced political power in terms of representation in the Senate, House of Representatives, and other political offices has hindered the region's influence and ability to advocate for its interests. Furthermore, the South East has been denied its fair share of federal revenue allocation, which is calculated based on the number of states in a region.
The Ohanaeze Ndigbo also pointed out that the South East has been strategically shortchanged in federal board appointments and other resource distributions. This systemic disadvantage has perpetuated the region's socio-economic difficulties.
While acknowledging that the current administration may not be solely responsible for this situation, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo appealed to President Tinubu to rectify the marginalization of the South East. They believe that his leadership and influence can help restore justice, equity, and fairness to Nigeria.
In concluding the statement, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo expressed its hopes for a prosperous and united Nigeria, where leaders prioritize the welfare and advancement of all citizens, irrespective of their ethnicity, creed, or political affiliation.
